Overview
Silk PLA is PLA with an additive that gives the extruded strand a reflective sheen, so layer lines read as a gradient rather than steps. It prints slightly hotter and slower than standard PLA and is a little weaker, because the additive reduces layer bonding. Choose it for decorative parts, gifts and display pieces; choose standard PLA when the part carries load.
Pros
- Glossy surface straight off the printer
- Layer lines less visible than standard PLA
- Same cool, no-enclosure process as PLA
- No post-processing needed for appearance
Cons
- Weaker layer bonding than standard PLA
- Same low heat resistance as PLA (~50 °C)
- Sheen hides fine detail on small features
- Narrower colour range
